Het Loo Palace - Wikipedia

We went to see the castle during this Summer's heatwave in Holland. The castle was closed due to Paleis Het Loo looks surprisingly modern despite having built in the s.

The interior is not as We visited on Sunday 7th April, and even on a Sunday, the palace was easily accessible by train from both Amsterdam and Den Haag the Hague. On exiting the railway station in Apeldoorn, the closest station to the palace, the bus station is right in front of you.

Contrary to the information on the palace web site, the easiest bus to take is the number 10, running every 30 minutes. This is a circular line so you get on and off at the same bus stop at the palace, and con't need to worry about finding the stop for the return journey. The name of the bus stop is Tuinsmanlaan, and this is announced on the loud speaker on the bus. Buy a single ticket from the driver for each journey as there are no return tickets. Alternatively use an OV chipcard.

When you get off the bus, walk about metres up the road in the direction in which the bus was travelling, and the palace is on your right.

You have to buy tickets from the stable block, which is a ten minute walk or so across the park you cut across diagonally. If you don't want to visit the stable block, buy your tickets on line beforehand, and you can then go straight into the palace and gardens. However, there is a lot to see in the stable block area as a lot of the temporary exhibitions are housed there.

At the time of my visit, there was the impressive funeral coach of Queen Wilhemina, set up with horses, as well as a rather amusing collection of Dutchroyal cars through the ages. After visiting the stables you can then proceed to the palace, which you may find quite crowded at a weekend. The rooms are impressive and worth a look however. I would love to return in the winter months when they set up displays to show how a Christmas would have looked. In April the gardens were not as impressive as they will be later in the year, since some building and renovation work was going on with the fountains in the Baroque garden, and it was too cold for the orange trees to be in their summer positions.

Also due to the really cold spring, the flowers were not yet out. In recent years, the upper gardens have been totally relaid, and there is also some work there, but you can get good views over the whole grden areas from the top of the colonades, as stairs have now been built into the back to give access to the top.

The KIngs and Queens gardens next to the palace are currently closed off as they are in the process of being totally relaid but these will be of real interest to any gardeners as you can see from above how this sort of garden is planned and laid out. Currently the patterned box hedges are being laid out and at present you can just see the outlines of how they will be in the future. A real work of art! There were plenty of loos and eating places in the palace.

However, I would suggest visiting on a sunny day and taking your own picnic to eat in the gardens or surrounding park areas. They really are a spectacular place to sit and enjoy the sunshine - and even in April there were many people just sitting with their eyes closed! After your visit, come back out from the main gate of the palace and turn left to walk back to the same bus stop to return home.

At this point the palace website would have you walk all the way back to the stables and beyond for public transport, and your feet realy wont want to do that! The website sates a visit takes 3 hours but we were there for 6 and chased out of the gate at closing time. Much to see and enjoy!! Beautiful grounds, paintings and sculpture. Presently some of the garden areas are being replanted, so you see only dirt. There is an audio self guide available.

Tons of tour buses all arriving at 10 am. Bathrooms are available and free. Each room is a photo opportunity, the people traffic moves quickly.

There is a cafe as well as a gift shop on site. The beauty of the decor is worth the trip. This palace is grand and the favorite of our monarchs. It is large and so are the fantastically decorated rooms. There is an elevater, so handicapt people can also visit. You actually get a choice of what to do. For free you can visit the stables with some magnificent coaches, and you can enjoy the restaurant there.

For a fee, you can visit the pace itself, now a museum, and the magnificent formal gardens. It was fine to pass an hour, but not all the gardens were open and the displays apart from 'The world of Beatrix' were looking a bit tired and old - but maybe they're meant to.
